Goffman dissects the meaning and practice of direct interaction, using "dramaturgical" tools - that is, he takes seriously the claim that "All the world is a stage, and we but merely players" (to roughly quote the Bard). Sociologist Erving Goffman based his seminal work Asylums (1961) on a year of field research at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC. Goffman described the mental hospital as a "total institution," in which regimentation dominated every aspect of daily life and patients were denied even the most basic means of self-expression; rather than promote recovery, such conditions produced the 2016-09-18 2020-12-11 Goffman’s Sociology of Everyday Life Interaction ——71. Goffman treats it as a kind of report in which he frames out the theatrical performance that applies to these interactions. He believes that when an individual comes in contact with other people, that individual will attempt to control or guide the impression that others might make of him by changing or fixing his or her setting, appearance, and manner. Goffman terms this the process of mortification and argues that it is based upon a psychiatric view of the self rather than a social one. Goffman observes that patients adjust to the hospital by regaining some sort of control over their selves, for example, Goffman (2004) och hans dramaturgiska perspektiv där han beskriver livet som en teaterföreställning (teaterscen), och att vi tar olika roller när vi framträder eller när vi är bakom kulisserna.
